FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EZ Press Release  -- October 17, 2016 The proprietors of The Meat Store have waxed at length about the disadvantages of sub-standard meat. The poor taste and the poor dietary result come together to create a product that to them has no place among the premium meats that are found behind their counter. But their gripes are not reflected by cooks only; the production of meat, around the world, is causing considerable problems.

One of the biggest issues stems from the overuse of antibiotics in agriculture. Antibiotics in agriculture are utilised for a variety of purposes, from the protection of an animal to disease, to growth metrics. Livestock that has been injected with antibiotics tends to gain weight more easily, and retain it, but there are some serious impacts that have been gaining headlines lately.

Only last week, the WHO met for only the fourth time to specifically cover an issue of public health. Of late, antibiotics have been losing their effectiveness, something that has been partially attributed to the overuse of antibiotics in agriculture. Over time, several pathogens have become resistant to even the strongest antibiotics currently available.

The consequences of this have been felt globally. Infections that were easily treatable by these drugs have become far more deadly, killing upwards of 700 000 people each year – cases that only a few years earlier were easily cured. With so many countries overusing antibiotics in their agricultural practices - including China, with its massive farms - the issue is only becoming more acute.

However, conscientious meat providers - such as The Meat Store in Sydney - make a point of sourcing meat that has not been injected with any supplementary antibiotics for weight gain. These animals are grown naturally, and their lifestyle and lower population density means that they have less need of a strong antibiotic to stay healthy.

Eating meat raised to respect this issue is just one way that we, as consumers, can work towards a more thoughtful method of eating our favourite foods, and preserves safe and effective medical treatments for future generations.
