Summertime and the Sun
Summertime and the Sun

\"\"With the finest weather of the year upon us, we can indulge in one of the most enjoyable pursuits we, as Australians, can partake in: the great outdoors. Our decks, and our extended outdoor spaces, give us the chance to enjoy the heat and the late evenings, all through the summer months.

But the strength of the sun, the same gift that allows us our tenable climate, is just as tough on our decks as it is on our skin. The wooden boards, left untreated, will begin to age prematurely if not properly protected. So let’s make sure that your deck can stand tall throughout the summer months, by laying down a solid coast of protectant.

The experts at Deckseal, a Melbourne-based firm, recommend starting your deck revival with a good sanding session. Remove old paint and sealant by thoroughly sanding your deck, working with the grain, with 80-120 grit sandpaper. This is time consuming, but doing so is the best way of starting off your job the right way. It will allow the sealant to sink in as best it can.

Next, remove all the sanded dust and excess wood with your hose, or better, a delicately-used pressure washer. Now, apply your oil-based sealant, using a good brush, and making sure to keep a wet edge - this will prevent noticeable overlaps in your application. Done properly, your deck will be ready to face the onslaught of UV rays, and will be looking fine for many years to come.
